ARCHIES RECORDING SESSIONS 6

In the early days, there was no official Archies fan club,
even though the demand was there. One of the first
things Archie and Veronica did after reuniting the group
in 2001 was launch one. It was already up and running when
their comeback album Archie Country catapulted The Archies
back into the media spotlight. Membership grew steadily:
At one point there were over 10,000 members worldwide,
not to mention thousands more Twitter and
Facebook followers!

BIG ETHEL + THE VIXENS

Ethel Muggs Mason, who became Archie's private secretary
in 2004, was president of the Archies Fan Club. Big Ethel
recruited a group of her friends to do much of the "grunt" work.
Some of these ladies were singers (Ethel herself was
a singer/rapper) and in fun, Betty and Veronica started calling
them The Vixens after their high school cheer-leading
squad. That's the name they used when, along with Ethel,
they accompanied The Archies on their first post-reunion
concert tour. The Vixens made numerous live appearances,
but they only toured that one time! The group (a rotating
roster of eight women who always performed as a trio)
much preferred office work and the occasional backing
vocal session to grueling life on the road.

FAN CLUB ALBUMS

A limited-edition vinyl single was pressed every year of
the Fan Club's existence; it usually went on sale in the
Fall. At first, these singles were showcases for current
Archies album tracks.  There were occasional rarities, too,
but in 2007 the band cut a Christmas single just for Club
members. "Archie" (Baby, Please Come Home)" sold well,
and the following year, the first Fan Club album was issued.
Five more would follow, and three Fan Club EP packages became
available. In 2009, AFC belatedly got its very own A & R
department, headed by Chuck Clayton and Alan Mayberry. In
addition to The Archies, Chuck, Betty + Veronica (recording
as a duo), Terry "Pop" Tate, The Vixens and two studio groups
led by Midge Mercury cut Fan Club masters.

FAN CLUB EPS

Once it began operating as a full-fledged record label,
AFC signed artists to short-term contracts. In lieu of
royalties, they got full ownership of the masters they
cut and a remarkable 40% of profits from the sale of
their LP or EP set. (All the singles released by AFC
were Archies recordings.) This kind of deal offered a
big signing incentive to potential acts; but not just
anybody could record for the Archies Fan Club! You
had to be part of the band's inner circle. That meant
tough t*tty for fashion model Katy Keene and Kevin
Keller's ex-boyfriend, porn star and wannabe rapper
Devin Sweetbottom!

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN EPs

Pressed on cherry red, emerald green and marigold vinyl,
these records weren't cheap! There was much grumbling
about the high prices, but Veronica wasn't having it.
"They're instant collector's items," she declared, "and
they'll be worth even more as time passes." It didn't take
long for the market to confirm her assessment: Just two
years after the final AFC release, the value of those vinyl
pressings has more than doubled! By the time Archiemania
explodes in the 2070s, vintage music dealers will demand
astronomical sums for original copies.

ARCHIE'S VINTAGE VINYL PRICE GUIDE

Recording sessions for AFC singles, albums and EPs took
place in London, Milan, Mèxico City, Muscle Shoals, New
Orleans and Mamaroneck, New York at the headquarters for
Archie Americana Productions. Big Ethel was executive
producer for the entire series. Her decision to leave
Archie's employ and become a Gospel singer had little
to do with the Fan Club's demise, although it was a factor.
What really did the AFC in was a fatal one-two punch:
Corporate raider Jason Blossom bought out Archie's
recording interests, and The Archies decided to go
on a hiatus that ended up lasting 15 years! All of
this happened in late 2014.

Fawn Ethel Muggs Mason is the legal name
of Big Ethel. When The Archies backed Chuck
Clayton on his album, their involvement was
kept secret, but it was a different story
this time: Ethel started talking about her
superstar backing musicians long before the
sessions ended (much to Veronica's consternation)!
But her boasting was ill-timed.  Kevin Keller did not
attend these dates.

These four selections hail from the Kirshner Records

date from the teenage Archies' earliest studio sessions
in 1988 to their final ones in 1992. Big Ethel remixed
the sides, intending to choose two for an Archies Fan Club
single; but before deciding which ones, she resigned
from Archie Americana Productions. Subsequently, the
Fan Club fell dormant and its 2015 Christmas release was
cancelled. An earlier live version of "Believe What You
Say" appears on the SAVAGE YOUNG ARCHIES album.

Gospel music hater Jason Blossom withheld
Big Ethel's album from release when he
purchased Archie Records in 2014. Her much-
anticipated recording career stalled and
won't regain momentum for years. After it does
and she becomes one of Gospel's rising stars,
Jason will sell the album master to Capitol
Records. Hoping to ensure its commercial failure,
he stipulates that The Archies' involvement must
never be publicized; however, Ethel's earlier
statements to the music press will undermine his
efforts to suppress sales. The belatedly-issued
BOSOM OF ABRAHAM LP goes Top Ten in the
year 2021 and bags a Grammy nomination
to boot!

EDDIE ROXCHILD
Spanish Eddie captured these performances live at South Korea's
2014 World Deejay Festival. Eddie was a featured disc spinner, and
The Archies made a special guest appearance. They performed
eleven other songs in addition to these two, all partially sung
in Korean or Japanese: "Black Is Black", "Land Of Milk And Honey"
(an Archie solo release), "My Marìa", "Precious And Few", "Sugar,
Sugar", "Chico's Girl", "Jet Airliner", "Glitter + Gold", "Love
Her!" and "Lady Jane".  In December 2012, the group dubbed Korean
vocals onto the studio version of "It's A Happening World" and scored
a modest hit in South Korea the following year.  None of the other
songs The Archies performed at the festival were ever tracked in foreign
languages, and they never recorded "Black Is Black" or "Jim Dandy" in any
language; however, a 2009 rehearsal tape of the latter tune exists.
Betty Jones is heard singing lead, just as she did on stage in Seoul;
her fiery rendition of the LaVern Baker oldie was arguably the most
popular track on a Festival compilation called KOREA POPS!

Rey Cochino's talented nephews will return for the band's 2032
Farewell World Tour. A legal entanglement with their previous
label (King Records, a company that Archie Records once
sued successfully) prevented the release of this EP; it isn't clear
whether it was going to be a regular Archie label release, or
intended for the Archies Fan Club.  A strong showcase
for both the group and the songs of Ellie Greenwich and
Mike Rashkow, the EP was to be titled I LOVE YOU. Arranger
Bree Spellman loved The Cochinos' superb performance
of "One Time In A Million"!  In the year 2039, she'll recommend
the tune to her protegés, The New Archies. First appearing in
the year 2069 on the hit compilation ARCHIE-MANIA,  it will re-
surface on a 2078 box set, THE BREE SPELLMAN

With help from some celebrity sidemen, The Archies
begin recording a Heavy Metal-flavored tribute to ABBA.
Eccentric "Mad Max" Manischevitz will become one of Europe's
most famous and successful record producers. He will later claim
to have produced these album sessions (including a notorious date
known as the "Five Lewd Dudes" session, where everyone
in the studio was stark naked)! Archie and Veronica's
infuriated responses to Max's claims are best left unquoted.

Trev Smith takes the lead on "Millie", his own Spanish

TV special. A Spanish lead vocal by Veronica replaces Toni
Topaz's lead from The Archies' English-language version
of "Waterloo". Immediately following this record date,
Archie and Veronica finalized a deal to sell their indie
label to Republic International.  News of this transaction
outraged the other group members!

MEN OF THE ARCHIES

Legal complications will keep the ABBA-NORMALITY album
off the market. It was squarely targeted at European fans
and signals how The Archies' marketing focus would have shifted
had they continued to record. However, rather than cut masters for
Jason Blossom, the much-despised new owner of Archie Records,
the band went on hiatus in late 2014. That hiatus will last
15 years!  Even more distressing: An entire century will
pass before their ABBA tribute is finally released to
international acclaim.

STONED LOVE is the last album that The Archies recorded
for Kirshner Records.  It never got released. When Archie purchased
the band's back catalog in 2005, he was overjoyed to finally gain
control of the master: A collection of Pop/Soul covers cut in 1992,
it's his hands-down favorite Archies LP. With their scheduled album
for 2015 (ABBA-NORMALITY) stuck in legal limbo, he planned to
substitute this rarity. Babalù remixed it with Latin oldies lovers in
mind, and Veronica suggested a provocative new title: ARCHIE'S
CHICANO OLDIES! But the idea was shot down by Jason Blossom,
who nixed a final Archie Records release in no uncertain terms: "Dude,
your label is deader than Hugh Hefner's d*ck at a Gay orgy!" The
merger king also put the kibosh on GOLDEN SUGAR, an Archies
hits compilation scheduled for Christmas. Hoping to increase the catalog's
value, JB will keep legal Archies releases off the market for ten long years!
Arch, Roni and Babalù had no choice but to shelve this ambitious project,
but they'll later be shocked to find bootlegs on the market (Jason, of
course, is the culprit)! A legit release of CHICANO OLDIES won't
appear until 2074, the year after Archie dies. However, producer
Ron Dante will make the original, un-remixed version available
in 2048 with help from The New Archies.

The Archies knew nothing about these overdub sessions for
what became the illegal ARCHIES SING CAROLE KING album.
Jason Blossom bootlegged every Archies track he could lay
hands on, but in only one case did he approve additional
production and remixes: The 24 demos that the group cut
with Carole King in late September 2001. Even a bottom-
line dude like JB knew when he had something special
on his hands! Jason paid some down-on-their-luck Jazz and
Country musicians to flesh out the demos and sneeringly
credited them as "The F*ckin' A's". He is almost certainly "Dr.
Douchebag", but the session crew never saw his face: Their
mystery producer directed them from a remote location. The
sound engineer's name will come as a nasty surprise when
The Archies learn it: Isak Chaudhury, the sound technician
who worked with them on their 2005 Toni Wine tribute album.
Dude was a music bootlegger from 'way back! When they
caught him in the act and fired his ass, the sometime Gay
porn star sabotaged their tapes. Fast forward to 2017, when
Isak and the ravenously Bisexual Jason are having a steamy
affair. Delighted to learn of his lover's troubled history
with The Archies, JB spitefully recruits his help in the studio . . .

In the 2070s, the Zen family will open a sister studio in Casablanca,
Morocco.  New Archies member Ramsay Khalid Sharma will cut
his final solo album there.  After secretly overdubbing The Archies'
unreleased Carole King demos, Jason Blossom stole them.
They'll never be found!  After JB's murder in 2027, Alan Mayberry will
take a long-overdue inventory of the Archie tape vault. Dude will be
horrified to find the demos missing and the bootleg master substituted:
A posthumous reminder of Jason's twisted sense of humor! Fortunately,
Alan M engineered those 2001 sessions and he saved his sound
mixes. Those mixes will be used for THE GOFFIN-KING DEMOS, a
legitimate 2030 release. Yet Jason's version of the album will sell
far more copies, and in fact, no Archies bootleg will be more
successful than ARCHIES SING CAROLE KING. The production
values were surprisingly solid, and the Australian and South African
overdub musicians played superbly. Archie and Veronica won't ever
market the bootleg master, but they will archive it. The marketing is
left to Buena Vista Media, which acquires the Archie catalog in 2124.
That legal release (titled SO MUCH LOVE) justifies this log entry and the
previous one. The session details come from secret studio logs
that will be found among Jason Blossom's personal effects.

Jason Blossom's media conglomerate Republic International no longer
exists. Its successor, Republic USA, now controls the Archie Records
catalog. The Archies regroup (sans Reggie Mantle and Trevor Smith),
and after much debate, they decide to let this new company market
their remake of "San Francisco". Featuring a lead vocal by
Kevin Keller (now officially a member of the band), the charity
single will bag a long-overdue second North-American chart-
topper! Despite a music video suggesting otherwise, Reggie will
not take part in these recording sessions; and despite the single's
success, The Archies will opt not to join the Republic USA
roster. Instead, they sign with Discos Fuentes, the Archie label's
former distributor in South America. With a handful of
exceptions, all of the group's new recordings will be Fuentes
masters.

DISCOGRAPHY PART FIVE

This fifth part of Archie's Studio Sessionography includes
Great American Songbook selections by such legendary writers as
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, TIM RICE, ALLEN REYNOLDS,
DORSEY + JOHNNY BURNETTE, EDWIN HAWKINS, THOMAS DORSEY,
BENNY ANDERSSON, BJÖRN ULVAEUS, SAMMY CAHN,
JAMES VAN HEUSEN, KENNY GAMBLE, LEON HUFF,

GERRY GOFFIN, CAROLE KING and JOHN PHILLIPS.
In Part Six (the conclusion), The Archies cut their farewell album,
make their final TV appearances (one without Archie) and log their
